90 games for BVB – this star is the coach of choice

Blau-Weiß Mintard are still looking for a new head coach. A real star could be on the way.

It was mid-September 2023 when DJK Blau-Weiß Mintard parted ways with its head coach Guido Contrino.

The former coach was replaced by Daniel Molitor. However, he is only seen as an interim solution on the Mülheim/Essen border. From the new year, an external head coach is set to take over at the regional league club.

And as Forecasting has now learned, it is none other than David Odonkor who is to take over in Mintard. The 39-year-old ex-professional is considered the preferred solution by those in charge.

The problem: According to RS information, Odonkor is still looking for a suitable assistant coach. He will only come if he finds an assistant. A final decision is to be made this week. But one thing is clear: the Mintard bosses want to sign Odonkor, who is now also a reality TV star and soccer expert on “Sport1.”

“I’m looking for a job as head coach. But I’m also listening to everything as a potential assistant coach. I’m open to many things. The important thing for me is that the club knows what it wants and that there is a sensible structure in place,” the 75-time Bundesliga professional Odonkor told Forecasting back in October. And he would definitely find a proper structure at Mintard, who are ninth in the Lower Rhine regional league Group 2.

Odonkor, who played 90 Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund in his career and finished third at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, has now been out of coaching for more than four years. The 39-year-old previously worked as sporting director at Hammer SpVg, was head coach at Bad Pyrmont and TuS Dornberg as well as assistant coach at SC Verl and Eskisehirspor in Turkey. According to information from our editorial team, Odonkor recently turned down an offer to become assistant coach at Oberliga club SG Wattenscheid 09.

Odonkor is no longer available to the clubs as a player-coach. “At some point it has to end. I enjoy being a coach and would love to be back on the pitch every day and pass on my experience to young talents. I think I’ve experienced a lot and can pass it on,” explains Odonkor.
