Elgert emotional after derby defeat, Tullberg was enthusiastic

On the first matchday of the U19 Bundesliga, FC Schalke 04 lost 1:3 in the Revier derby at BVB. This is what the coaches said after the match.

The first matchday of the U19 Bundesliga and the derby between Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04. In the end, BVB won 3:1, although Borussia Dortmund was not the team that dominated the game throughout. In the first half, however, BVB benefited from gross errors by Schalke and the individual quality of Julian Rijkhoff, who scored a brace (12/16). Also successful was Ayukayoh Mengot (40th).

BVB coach Mike Tullberg was enthusiastic about his team after the match: “I am very proud. We managed to beat one of the clear favourites with fight, fighting spirit and great football in the first half. The preparation didn’t go as well as in the last few years and we also lack a bit of quality, but then we have to make up for it with other things and we did that well. “

Schalke: Naive in half one, strong in half two

Schalke coach Norbert Elgert was not dissatisfied despite the clear defeat, but was particularly critical of the naivety in the first half: “In the first half we were very naive and played into BVB’s hands. Dortmund were very aggressive and defended forward, and we gave them gifts. All the goals we conceded were avoidable and Borussia Dortmund scored with a lot of quality. We had two 100 per cent chances, actually it must have been 3:2 for Dortmund at half-time.”

After the break, Schalke took more and more control of the game, but failed to score despite several good chances. The consolation goal only came in the 94th minute via a penalty kick by Keke Topp. Elgert was sure after the game that his team would have had a good chance to catch up if they had scored earlier: “We did one thing well in the second half: we didn’t concede another goal. We actually wanted to catch up one goal after the other, and the half went completely to us. But we still lack the coolness that a Rijkhoff, for example, has. If we score 3:1 early, we can still catch up. Then we would have played for a draw or maybe even won. Dortmund were knocked out, they might have fitness problems, but we’ll see in the course of the season. “

A lack of respect on Dortmund’s side?

Attentive spectators noticed that Elgert had an emotional conversation with a BVB official after the match. What exactly happened beforehand was not apparent. In any case, Elgert explained: “Football has a lot to do with respect and we always try to show this to our opponent. “

Also with a view to the opponent, Elgert spoke again on the subject of respect: “BVB are always dangerous with their incredible quality. They are a European team, and you have to say that. And for that I have the greatest respect. I always pay respect to the opponent, I emphasise that quite clearly. “
