VfL Bochum not only pulled off a sensational win against FC Bayern Munich. VfL have also taken a big step closer to relegation.
VfL Bochum have actually done it again! FC Bayern Munich was defeated 3:2 in the Ruhrstadion.
“There will be a drink other than water,” said VfL coach Thomas Letsch, naturally in a good mood. “In the end, there’s no reason to celebrate. It’s a good feeling, the boys should enjoy it tonight and I’ll certainly have a grin on my face.”
And he had every reason to. After all, his plan against the record champions worked almost perfectly. “We wanted to be brave, even after the negative experience in Munich. We wanted to attack high up the pitch, impose our soccer and that worked well right from the start.”
Only Jamal Musiala, who also scored the 1:0 for Bayern, did not get a grip on VfL in the early stages. “We were able to correct that after 20 or 25 minutes.” Letsch was particularly pleased with the reaction to falling behind
“You can’t underestimate that when you get a goal against Bayern. You have the 0:7 in Munich in the back of your mind, then it’s not so easy.” But his team was not deterred. “We came back, made it 1:1 with a great transition situation and certainly didn’t turn the game around undeservedly with ‘Schlotti’s’ header.”
“With a passionate fight and a little bit of luck”
VfL continued to put up a good fight in the second half and even went one better with a penalty from Kevin Stöger. “After 3:1, it was all about defending with man and mouse. Then ‘Manu’ made two great saves. We didn’t win the game undeservedly, with a passionate fight and a little bit of luck. “
The decisive factor in the victory was the cohesion within the entire team: “We have a team with a great mentality. The lads push each other, everyone throws themselves into it and wants to defend the goal with everything they’ve got. You could tell from the team all week that they believe that something is possible.”
The three points have lifted VfL to eleventh place, nine points ahead of the relegation places. “We played against Stuttgart, Dortmund, Frankfurt and Bayern in the second half of the season and are sixth in the table. 25 points sounds good, we have a certain cushion, but we also know that nothing has been achieved yet. We have to see this thing through to the end.”
Another big step can be taken next weekend. “Of course, we’re going to Gladbach with a good feeling. Knowing full well that it’s an important game in which the aim is to at least maintain or even increase the gap.” The Foals are 15th in the table with three points less
