MSV Duisburg brings BVB to their knees – luck with the crossbar in the 90th minute

MSV Duisburg were under pressure from the other results and delivered. So it can still work with the relegation in the 3rd league.

MSV Duisburg closed out the 28th matchday of the 3rd division with a home game. The Zebras therefore knew what the competition had done before the kick-off against Borussia Dortmund’s U23s.

That was not all good news, as Waldhof Mannheim won their home game against leaders Jahn Regensburg and Hallesche FC defeated runners-up Dynamo Dresden. Arminia Bielefeld and VfB Lübeck each picked up a point.

MSV therefore had the chance to close the gap between themselves and the safety zone from five points to four points. That worked out perfectly with a 2:1 (2:0) win – against BVB II, who have been the second-best team in the second half of the season so far.

Dortmund therefore started offensively, as did MSV. There wasn’t much of a feeling-out process, which was different to before. MSV proved to be efficient. The first two chances were taken straight away.

First, the strong Thomas Pledl set up Thomas Esswein’s 1:0. He then scored himself after Daniel Ginczek’s assist to make it 2:0 early on. The double strike pulled the plug on BVB, who were completely unable to get into the game. On the contrary: MSV had a double chance to make it 3-0 before the break – but Esswein and Pledl missed

Turbulence continued after the changeover. Falko Michel’s shot showed that BVB were still there. At the other end, Ginczek hit the crossbar. After that, the game calmed down and BVB continued to struggle to create anything in attack

Almost out of nowhere, things got exciting again 15 minutes before the end. Antonios Papadopoulos made it 1:2 from Dortmund’s perspective. The defender headed home from a free-kick.

The Zebras managed to hold on to the 2-1 lead, although they had to take another deep breath in the 90th minute. Rodney Elongo-Yombo only hit the crossbar, from where it bounced against the back of MSV goalkeeper Vincent Müller, after which the keeper had the ball safely. It was over shortly afterwards, and the victory over the 90 minutes was definitely deserved.

MSV continue their campaign next Sunday (March 10, 13:30) at SpVgg Unterhaching. BVB II will face Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday (March 9, 2 p.m.)
