RWE hungry for goals at Hafenstrasse – question mark behind Wiegel

Hafenstrasse is synonymous with spectacle these weeks. Another example was provided by RWE’s furious 4:0 win against Ingolstadt.

Rot-Weiss Essen remain a force at Hafenstraße. On Sunday afternoon, the Essen side secured their twelfth home win of the season with a 4-0 victory over FC Ingolstadt. By comparison, RWE only won nine games in the whole of last season, five of them in front of a home crowd.

With 38 points after 18 games, the fourth-placed team in the table is currently the strongest team in the league at home. And that’s not all: RWE scored 36 goals in these 18 games, an average of two goals per home game. No other third division team has scored so often. Incidentally, FC Ingolstadt is in second place, scoring 34 goals.

In the second half of the season in particular, Rot-Weiss have proved themselves to be goal-hungry and goal-scoring in their home games. Head coach Christoph Dabrowski’s team scored 23 times in eight games. Four goals were scored three times in a row (against Dortmund II, Duisburg and Ingolstadt).

The mood was correspondingly exuberant after the resounding victory against Schanzer. Fans and players celebrated together on the pitch for several minutes. There was applause from the entire stadium during the team’s lap of honor. Even during the game, there were chants of “Essen is the coolest club in the world”. The fact is: regardless of the outcome of the season, something has really grown together at Hafenstraße, fans and players are a real unit

In this third division season, however, Essen will only play one more home game: On Friday evening, May 10 (7 p.m.), 1860 Munich will travel to Bergeborbeck for the traditional duel. A sold-out Hafenstraße awaits RWE once again at the end of the season.

Fears for Wiegel, Brumme probably not seriously injured

It remains to be seen whether Andreas Wiegel will be fit and ready for this game: the veteran has been suffering from knee problems since the Saarbrücken game. An exact diagnosis is still pending and he will be examined on Monday.

Lucas Brumme was at least given the all-clear after being substituted due to injury. After a foul by Benjamin Kanuric, he had to be substituted with hip flexor pain. In the catacombs, the top performer was already running reasonably well again and said with a grin: “There are injections. “
