Monheim brings in defender, brother of a Schonnebeck player plays in European Championships

Promoted 1. FC Monheim continues to upgrade its squad. Meanwhile, a midfielder from SpVg Schonnebeck is making headlines for other reasons.

After successfully regaining promotion to the Oberliga Niederrhein, 1. FC Monheim were able to keep the majority of their promotion squad together. Now coach Dennis Ruess can look forward to another new signing: Luca Kiefer is moving from SC Paderborn II to Kapellenstraße.

Shortly beforehand, the Monheim club announced the signing of Julian Kanschik. The 31-year-old has played for Cronenberger SC for the past four years. He scored 16 points in 30 games there in the last Landesliga season.

Kiefer joins FCM as a 21-year-old central defender who made 15 appearances in the Regionalliga West for SC Paderborn U23 last season. He can be deployed variably in the defensive center and also played 59 games in the Oberliga Westfalen for the East Westphalians. Prior to that, he spent a total of six years training at Borussia Mönchengladbach’s youth academy.

“In Luca, we are getting a highly trained youngster from the region who already has a good deal of experience despite his young age. With his physicality, intensity and heading ability, he can become an important factor in our defense. Above all, his flexibility in central defense gives us further options. After promotion with Paderborn, the playing time was reduced last season, which meant that Luca wanted to return home,” explained FCM sporting director Karim El-Fahmi.

“He committed to FCM early on in the talks and wants to take the next steps with us. We are happy to have acquired a young and talented player from the region and are already looking forward to the start in July.”

SpVg Schonnebeck – Brazhko brother plays at the European Championships

It is still quiet around SpVg Schonnebeck in the current transfer phase. The six departures have so far been offset by just one new arrival, Kerron Oteng-Adjei, who has been brought up from the club’s own U19s. For Schonnebeck midfielder Daniil Brazhko, however, these are exciting days.

His older brother Volodymyr is currently in the spotlight as he is in the Ukraine national team squad for the European Championship. The 22-year-old six-man from Dynamo Kyiv, whose market value is estimated at 5 million euros according to Transfermarkt.de, was substituted in the 62nd minute of Ukraine’s 3-0 opening defeat to Romania. It was his fifth appearance in a yellow and blue shirt. It cannot be ruled out that there could be more to come in this tournament.
