BVB’s U19 team is currently in a class of its own, as FC Schalke discovered in the derby.
The U19 Bundesliga derby was on the schedule on Wednesday evening. FC Schalke, in second place, challenged league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
The gap before the game was already nine points, after the 90 minutes it is twelve points, BVB stands alone at the top of the Junioren-Bundesliga.
Schalke coach Norbert Elgert promised before the game: “We will give everything we have – but that goes without saying. We do that against every opponent.”
But that wasn’t enough against BVB in the 2-1 (0-1) defeat. So the derby turned out like most of the last few duels – because: in recent years, Dortmund have usually had the upper hand. Five of the last six league meetings have been won by the black and yellow.
The 2022 German Cup semi-final second leg was the only game Schalke have won since 2020 (1-0), but that was after a 5-1 first-leg defeat.
On Wednesday, the first few minutes belonged to Schalke in front of 770 spectators, but BVB proved efficient. Zaid Amoussou scored early for Royal Blue, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
Then Paris Brunner made it 1-0 to Dortmund. A scene that showed all his talent. It was already the 15th goal in the current U19 season for the attacker.
BVB then showed their maturity, while Schalke countered with aggression. When Jean-Paul Ndiaye also missed an opportunity for the S04 talents, the game went into the break with Schalke trailing 0-1.
After the break, BVB had the first opportunity, but S04 had the biggest chance. But Tristan Osmani shot into the evening sky. That backfired shortly afterwards, when it was Kjell Wätjen who put the supposed lid on the derby by making it 2-0 for BVB.
But Schalke did not give up, even though the miners even missed a penalty. After a foul on Bruno Numbisie, Bilal Brusdeilins missed the penalty.
Shortly afterwards, substitute Edion Gashi reduced the deficit to 2-1 for Schalke. But despite Schalke’s best efforts, BVB held on for the 2-1 win. This was also thanks to BVB keeper Robin Lisewski, who made a great save in the 94th minute.
Schalke will next play on Sunday (February 25, 11 a.m.) at SC Paderborn, while BVB will face Arminia Bielefeld at the same time.
