Tönnies continues to rule out return: “My time is up”

Clemens Tönnies has spoken about the situation at FC Schalke 04. A return is still out of the question for the former supervisory board chairman.

Clemens Tönnies is watching the situation at his former club Schalke 04, which is in serious crisis, with great concern – but continues to rule out a return to a management position. “No, my time is up. I had the best time,” said the former chairman of Schalke’s supervisory board on Tuesday in Cologne: “We built Schalke together and everything has its time.” In view of the current situation, “my Schalke heart is bleeding.”

Tönnies was a guest at the premiere of the documentary “DAUM – TRIUMPHE & SKANDALE”, which will be shown on Sky and WOW from October 27 and was filmed to mark the 70th birthday of former championship coach Christoph Daum.

Tönnies explained that he had “offered to help often enough” and “in some cases didn’t get any answers at all”. He is convinced that the former European Cup regular and current second division club can be saved. “Schalke is easy to do, you just have to be consistent,” said the entrepreneur: “Those in charge now have to lead Schalke out of this crisis. That’s the most important thing.” He does not want to “add fuel to the fire.”

The question about the reasons for the sporting crash is “one of the hardest I can be asked,” said Tönnies, who had resigned from his post in 2020: “I have no answer and no understanding at all for what I see there. I can’t understand things. Football is business, business, football is professionalism.”
