That’s why fewer fans are traveling to Dresden than expected

Rot-Weiss Essen is facing an explosive away game at Dynamo Dresden. Many RWE fans prefer another game in eastern Germany.

When the traditional clubs Dynamo Dresden and Rot-Weiss Essen meet, the police will also have an intensive day of work ahead of them.

To make matters worse, two major events are taking place in Saxony’s state capital this Sunday. Parallel to the third division game in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium (1:30 p.m., MDR), a Pegida demonstration is taking place in Dresden. However, there are enough police officers available and planned for the game between Dresden and RWE, which is classified as a “high-risk game”, as police spokesman Lukas Reumund explained to “Bild”.

New police dogs will also be used to keep order. “It is a category 1 game – we have more officers on duty accordingly,” says Reumund.

The crowds from Essen are not as big as they were at the last games in Dresden, when over 2000 Essen fans travelled with them. 2534 tickets were made available to Rot-Weiss Essen fans, and only just under 1000 tickets were sold in advance. Spontaneous away fans still have the opportunity to buy tickets at the box office in front of the stadium on Sunday.

Rot-Weiss Essen in Rostock: special train already sold out

One important reason for the lower demand from Essen fans is the tight schedule. After the home game against SC Verl on Wednesday, the next long away trip awaits the Rot-Weiss on Saturday (2 p.m.). Then they will also head east, to Hansa Rostock.

More than 2000 of the 2600 available tickets have already been purchased for the match against the relegated second division team. The fan and support department has planned a special train, which sold out in record time. 700 seats were sold within 70 minutes.

RWE: Sunday date disadvantageous for fans

Two expensive away trips within just six days are not something every RWE fan who loves to travel can handle. The more fan-friendly date on Saturday is also an advantage for Hansa Rostock. Dresden is Rot-Weiss Essen’s second long-distance away game to be played on a Sunday after Unterhaching. For working fans, a return late on Sunday evening is an additional reason to watch the game at home in front of the TV.
