Boss on change of coach – “We are prepared”

Swiss football coach Gerardo Seoane must fear his dismissal at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen if he fails to turn things around in the next two games.

“You can assume that we are prepared,” Fernando Carro, the chairman of Bayer’s management, told Sport1’s Doppelpass on Sunday. On Friday, the Werksklub had lost 4-0 to champions Bayern Munich.

They want to continue with the coach, but life is not a wishful thinking concert, Carro said. “You don’t do your job properly if you don’t prepare for all situations,” he stressed. With just five points, the Champions League starters occupy 17th and penultimate place in the Bundesliga table. On Tuesday (21.00/DAZN), Bayer take on FC Porto in the top flight, followed by the home match on Saturday (15.30/Sky) against promoted Schalke 04.

“Maybe other clubs would be quicker in making a decision. But we need results as soon as possible also in Porto, and then also against Schalke you have to make the three points,” Carro demanded.

Asked about ex-Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel, the club boss said: “Thomas Tuchel is an excellent coach, that’s all I can say.” And then added with a smile: “Rudi Völler (former sports director of Bayer, ed.) told me that he was in contact with Thomas Tuchel years ago.”

They believe in turning the buck with Seoane, but are not naïve. Carro: “Statistically, no team that has five points after eight games has reached the Champions League.” Addressing the team, he said, “We have to show a different will in the next games. We can’t go on like this, it’s unacceptable.”

The “will and gall” is something he himself has exemplified since taking charge, he said. “We are number four in the Bundesliga in terms of budget. Then we also have to finish among the top four, that is also the expectation of our shareholder (the Bayer Group, ed.),” the 58-year-old explained.
