KFC Uerdingen – MSV – Floodlight failure, here’s what happens next

It’s rare for the first half to last 37 minutes and the second half 53 minutes. But that’s possible in Uerdingen, where KFC is playing against MSV Duisburg.

Curious scenes in Krefeld. The first half of the Lower Rhine Cup round of 16 match between KFC Uerdingen and MSV Duisburg had to be called off early in front of around 10,000 spectators in the packed Grotenburg stadium. The reason: with the score at 2-0 to the favorites from the 3rd division, one of the floodlight masts failed in the 37th minute. Referee Davide Zeisberg immediately blew the whistle to end the game. A fuse had blown, and an electrician was on site to fix the problem. At first, it seemed as if the referee wanted to send both teams to the locker rooms, but then the teams went to the benches.

Subsequently, the first half was ended early after all. The MSV fans used the time to simply continue celebrating. They have plenty of reasons to do so, because even at KFC, the Meiderich team seems to be unbeatable. Joshua Bitter and Christian Viet made sure of that early on in the first 20 minutes, even though KFC is not giving up and is trying to catch up.

And they still have a chance to do so, because the match will continue as follows. There will be a 15-minute half-time break. After that, the game will resume with the last six minutes of the first half, and the second half will follow immediately.

In view of the difficult years Uerdingen has had recently, the Duisburg fans were also ready with some schadenfreude, because after the floodlight mast failed, they sang: “No money again – KFC.”
