SpVg Schonnebeck has cleared the high hurdle of Baumberg in the Oberliga Niederrhein. The reward: third place. Here’s what the two coaches had to say after the game.
On the 10th match day of the Oberliga Niederrhein, SpVg Schonnebeck secured its place among the top teams with a 2-1 (2-1) away win in the top match against Sportfreunde Baumberg in front of just 100 spectators at the MEGA Stadium. Dirk Tönnies’ team now ranks third behind the strong Germania from Ratingen and VfB Homberg. The “Swallows” got off to a better start, but the home side fought their way forward and tried to create danger with crosses and set pieces. Consequently, the coach of the Essen district club was annoyed about the quick equalizer: “An unnecessary and individual mistake led to the 1-1. Fortunately, we are so solid this season that we can quickly compensate for such a slip-up.“
His conclusion: ”By missing two or three clear-cut chances, we kept Baumberg alive for an unnecessarily long time. Nevertheless, the victory is not undeserved,“ Tönnies emphasized after 90 minutes, referring to his team’s greater share of the game. ”In the end, we also had a bit of luck, but that’s normal when two teams from the upper regions meet.”
Baumberg, on the other hand, lost some ground in the upper reaches of the table with this defeat and now stands in sixth place. However, Salah El Halimi did not seem too disappointed. “The game started very badly for us; we probably left our minds in the locker room,” said the Sportfreunde coach, referring to the early goal that was scored almost immediately after the kickoff. “The 1-2 also annoys me immensely. We’ve all known Kevin Kehrmann for ten years in the Oberliga, his throw-ins are well known everywhere. Nevertheless, we conceded the goal before the break because of something like that. We simply have to take the 1-1 into halftime,” El Halimi shook his head.
Nevertheless, the long-standing Baumberger manager praised the enormous quality of the visitors, which made his defeat seem somewhat more bearable. “We recovered in the second half. You just know how difficult Schonnebeck are to play against in general,” he said, paying tribute to his fellow coach at the press conference.
While Baumberger will be looking to get back on track this coming Sunday against bottom-of-the-table Kleve (October 26, 3 p.m., Bresserberg Stadium), Tönnies’ team will be hosting SV Sonsbeck (at Schettersbusch) at the same time. A home win is a must if they want to keep the gap to leaders Ratingen from getting too big.
