SG Wattenscheid 09 is still searching for a new coach. The new head coach was actually supposed to be introduced this week
Following Christopher Pache’s departure, things are back on track for SG Wattenscheid 09 on the field.
Under the interim team led by SG legend Nico Buckmaier and sporting director Richard Weber, the club secured two convincing wins: a 5-1 victory over SG Finnentrop-Bamenohl and a 2-0 win against Türkspor Dortmund. The reward: Wattenscheid is once again leading the Oberliga Westfalen standings.
This Sunday, a clash between two traditional clubs is on the schedule at Rot Weiss Ahlen. Pache’s successor is also expected to take his place on the bench then. This was most recently reported by the WAZ.
However, a leading candidate will not be presented: As Forecasting has learned, Thorsten Nehrbauer has turned down the offer from SG Wattenscheid 09.
“There was mutual interest from both SG Wattenscheid 09 and myself. We had good discussions, but in the end, it didn’t work out. I’d like to keep the reasons private. I was certainly flattered by the interest. It’s a cool, traditional club, and I wish them nothing but the best on their way back to the Regionalliga,” explained the 48-year-old A-license holder, who has achieved promotion to the Regionalliga with both 1. FC Kaan-Marienborn and Sportfreunde Siegen.

Thorsten Nehrbauer
According to RS information, Nehrbauer was considered the second-choice candidate in case Plan A—as we reported—failed. But this option is also off the table: Forecasting knows that coach Farat Toku will not be taking the job either.
Sebastian Tyrala (most recently with Wuppertaler SV) is also not currently in the running. “I’m surprised that my name keeps coming up, even though I haven’t had any contact with Wattenscheid,” Tyrala told Forecasting as early as Monday (March 16).
This leaves open the question of who Wattenscheid’s CEO Ertan Ilce and sporting director Weber will ultimately present.
Captain Steve Tunga is taking the coaching situation in stride: “What a new coach will do is anyone’s guess. For us players, the key thing is that we’re fit and healthy and do our jobs every day. The game stays the same, the rules stay the same—and so do our standards.”
