Once in Schalke’s youth system, most recently in the Europa League – FCK signs defensive star

Second-division soccer club 1. FC Kaiserslautern has struck again in the transfer market. Another center back is joining the team.

On Friday, 1. FC Kaiserslautern announced the signing of Jacob Rasmussen. The 28-year-old Dane was signed on a permanent basis from RB Salzburg. He is the third new signing and the second new center back of the winter transfer window, following Norman Bassette (forward, loan, Coventry City) and Atanas Chernev (defender, loan, CF Estrela Amadora).

“With Jacob, we are gaining a player who can help us develop further with his qualities. These include his strength in the air and his game intelligence. In addition, thanks to his international experience, he possesses a strong mentality and leadership qualities both on and off the field. Furthermore, as a left-footed player, he fits perfectly into our squad planning. We also believe that, given his career to date, Jacob can play an important role in the team and successfully contribute his experience here,” said FCK sporting director Marcel Klos.

Rasmussen was still on the bench on Thursday during RB Salzburg’s Europa League match against Aston Villa. He has made 29 appearances for the Austrian side this season, 27 of them as a starter. This includes the first six group stage matches in the Europa League.

“1. FC Kaiserslautern is a great club that has developed positively in recent years and set clear goals for the future. My discussions with Marcel Klos and Torsten Lieberknecht convinced me that I want to join FCK on this journey. I hope to help the team with my experience and look forward to working together with the squad to build a successful future,” said Rasmussen.

The left-footed player, who made the Danish national team squad in March 2024, transferred from Bröndby IF to Salzburg in the summer of 2025 for a transfer fee of 1.5 million euros. Prior to that, Rasmussen played for clubs including AC Florence, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Vitesse Arnhem, Erzgebirge Aue, and St. Pauli. In 2014, at the age of 17, he joined the youth academy of FC Schalke 04, where he spent two years.
