Borussia Dortmund’s U-19 team has suffered its second defeat in the Youth League. BVB lost 1-2 (0-1) to Villarreal FC in the closing minutes.

Borussia Dortmund’s U19 team suffered a narrow defeat in the Youth League on Tuesday afternoon. Coach Felix Hirschnagl’s team lost 1–2 (0–1) to FC Villarreal.

After falling behind 0–1 early (9th minute), Paul Tanyi scored for BVB in the 73rd minute off a cross from Nick Cherny to tie the game at 1–1—but the visitors restored their lead to 2–1 in the 88th minute.

The visitors from Spain got off to a better start in Brackel and took an early lead. Dortmund lost the ball in the opponent’s half, and Villarreal transitioned at lightning speed. Following a cross from the right flank, Hugo Lopez outmuscled Paul Tanyi at the near post and slotted home to make it 0–1 (9th minute).

Overall, however, the Black and Yellows rarely managed to break through the solid Spanish defense. One of the best chances came from Mathis Albert, whose shot—after dribbling in from the left flank—flew just wide of the goal (25th minute). At the other end, Dortmund goalkeeper Aaron Held tipped a powerful shot from Lopez over the crossbar (28th minute).

Although Dortmund dominated play after the break, they rarely created dangerous scoring opportunities. Early in the closing stages, BVB finally had something to celebrate. Nick Cherny sent the ball into the center, where it slipped through and landed at the feet of Paul Tanyi, who tapped it in at the far post to make it 1–1 (73′).

Cherny nearly put his team ahead from distance, but his powerful shot flew just past the right post (81′). Shortly afterward, Etcibasi also missed the goal by the narrowest of margins with his shot from a tight angle (83′).

But instead of a now-deserved Dortmund lead, there was a sudden knockout blow: Unai Rodriguez initiated the attack himself with a lofted pass to Moussa Traore, on which Borussia protested for offside. Traore laid the ball back from near the end line into the center, where Rodriguez slotted it low through Held’s legs to make it 1–2 (88′).

“If you look at the game as a whole after 90 minutes, I’d say we did everything better than our opponent except for the result,” summarized Dortmund coach Hirschnagl. “The loss is bitter, but I can’t blame the guys. In the first half, you have to work your way into the game, and that’s also why things kept getting better in the second half.”

Following their second loss in the current competition, the Black and Yellows now sit in eleventh place in the standings after the fifth matchday. This coming Sunday (12 p.m.), they’ll continue with an away game in the DFB Youth League against SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
