In the first quarter-final of the European Football Championship in England, the hosts had to tremble for a long time against Spain. It was not until six minutes before the end of normal time that Manchester United’s Ella Toone equalised the score at 1-1 in Brighton.
Bayern Munich’s Georgia Stanway then made the semi-finals perfect with her long-range strike to make it 2-1. Esther González scored the opening goal for Spain in the 54th minute. The title favourites from the island will now face the winner of the Sweden-Belgium match in the last four. So far, the English women have no European Championship title to their name.
Germany will fight for a place in the semi-finals against Austria in Brentford in west London this evening. The two women’s teams from France and the Netherlands will meet on Saturday.
