While Alemannia Aachen have done their homework at the top of the Regionalliga West table, their rivals are stumbling. A cellar child benefits.
Alemannia Aachen defended their position at the top of the Regionalliga West table with a commanding 4-0 win over FC Gütersloh. There was never any doubt about the winner of the game at the Tivoli.
Kilian Pagliuca opened the scoring after just seven minutes and Marc Brasnic quickly increased the lead to 2:0 (20′). After the break, Thilo Töpken (52) and Sasa Strujic (56) increased the score.
1. FC Bocholt only managed a 0-0 draw at SC Wiedenbrück – not enough to keep pace with league leaders Aachen. The Bocholters simply could not get into their opponents’ penalty area.
The other teams chasing Alemannia also struggled. Third-placed Fortuna Köln were held to a 2-2 draw at bottom club SV Lippstadt 08. The goals were initially scored by Niek Munsters (42) and Henri Carlo Matter (62).
Then the underdogs even took the lead – Lars Holtkamp scored to make it 2:1 (73′). However, the lead was not to last long – Dominik Lanius (78) equalized immediately.
Wuppertal lose at basement club Wegberg-Beeck
For their part, Wuppertaler SV suffered a 3-1 defeat at FC Wegberg-Beeck. Lion Schweers had given them an early 1-0 lead (9′).
However, Wegberg-Beeck then turned up the heat and made it 3:1 within 22 minutes through Timo Bornemann (50′), Shpend Hasani (61′) and Bornemann again (72′).
While FC Wegberg-Beeck celebrate a very important victory in the relegation battle and do their utmost to avoid extending their relegation record, Wuppertal barely have to squint at the top of the table. Alemannia Aachen are now a full ten points away.
Following Fortuna Köln’s draw, WSV are fourth. The duo could still slip down the table if RWO win against Fortuna Düsseldorf II on Sunday, February 25.
Meanwhile, FC Schalke 04’s second team drew 0-0 at SV Rödinghausen. The reserves of FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach also drew 1-1 in the small Rhineland derby after goals from Oliver Schmitt (68′) and Jacob Italiano (75′).
