Alexander Hahn watched MSV Duisburg’s home win against SC Verl from the fan section at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. For him, it was a special experience.

After the 0-1 loss in Ulm, Alexander Hahn was still visibly upset. At the Donaustadion, the center back had picked up his fifth yellow card and had to watch the big match against SC Verl from the stands a week later.

Ben Schlicke stepped into the MSV Duisburg back four in his place. But the team managed just fine without him. The Meiderich-based side won 4–2 and remain a force to be reckoned with at home in the 3. Liga.

Instead of taking a seat in the main stands, the 33-year-old mingled with the passionate fans behind the goal in the North Curve—not far from the chant leaders’ platform. As early as 45 minutes before kickoff, the fans had gathered en masse in the stadium to get pumped up for the showdown with arguably the league’s strongest opponent.

“It was unbelievable. I was right in the middle of it and had a blast. Hats off to what those guys pull off. I’ve lost my voice,” the captain told “MagentaSport” during halftime.

Even without their driving force, the Duisburg team was extremely effective, especially in the first half. A brace by Lex-Tyger Lobinger, along with goals from Dennis Borkowski and birthday boy Patrick Sussek (26), sealed the deal.

Especially after winning the ball high up in the opponent’s half, the Meiderich team transitioned quickly and purposefully. Jan-Simon Symalla, returning to the starting lineup, brought a lot of pace to the game. Defensively, MSV ultimately withstood Verla’s increasing offensive pressure.

“The 3rd League is intense and characterized by a lot of one-on-one battles. We handled them well,” Hahn praised after the game. With 43 points now, the Zebras climbed back to second place and are two points ahead of SC Verl, which currently occupies the first non-promotion spot. They are just two points away from their stated season goal of avoiding relegation.

“With 45 points, you’re almost certain to stay in the 3rd League. But we want to win every game and won’t shy away from anything,” the veteran made clear. On Saturday in Wiesbaden, the defender will return to the center of the defense.
