Acar and Tokat in the stands—here’s how the search for a new coach is going at Uhlenkrug

ETB SW Essen picked up another point in their second game under interim coach Björn Matzel. Here’s the latest on the search for a new coach.

Following the departure of head coach Dennis Czayka and the subsequent 2-0 derby victory over Adler Frintrop, ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen had to settle for a scoreless draw at 1. FC Monheim.

Given the good scoring opportunities in the second half, however, more would have been possible for the Black-and-Whites under interim coach Björn Matzel.

“In the first 20 minutes, we had a hard time getting into the game and couldn’t get a foothold. We then made some adjustments and things went much better. In the second half, we were really in the game, but we also had a few moments where things got dangerous at the back. Monheim could have scored a goal there. Based on our second-half performance, though, we definitely deserved three points. We should have capitalized on our scoring chances better and played the ball more cleanly in the final third. That said, the field was very slippery and soft. If we’d played a bit more cleanly, though, we would have secured the three points. “Under these difficult conditions, though, you sometimes just have to settle for one point,” Matzel concluded.

Next Sunday (November 2), ETB will play another home game. At 3 p.m., Schwarz-Weiß will host VfB 03 Hilden at their home stadium, Uhlenkrug. It’s not yet clear who will be on the sidelines.

Most recently, Suat Tokat—who has worked for Essen in the past—and Sunay Acar (most recently with 1. FC Bocholt, SV Straelen, and VfB Homberg) have been the subject of interest among spectators at ETB games. However, neither of them is reportedly being considered for the Uhlenkrug, nor is Lars Fleischer. The former assistant coach of Rot-Weiss Essen’s first team is said to have higher ambitions.

ETB President Karl Weiß told Forecasting about the search for a coach: “Björn Matzel is doing a great job, and he’ll be on the bench against Hilden as well. For now, he should see how he likes it. We can certainly imagine a long-term solution with Björn. In any case, we don’t have any external candidates. But in the week leading up to the Ratingen game, we’ll present a new head coach.”
