After Being Sent Off Against Schalke—Here’s How Long Goalkeeper Schenk Will Be Suspended

Second-division club Preußen Münster will have to do without starting goalkeeper Johannes Schenk in its upcoming league matches after he was sent off during the 0-0 draw against Schalke 04.

With 55 minutes elapsed in last Saturday’s second-division match between Preußen Münster and FC Schalke 04 (0–0), Münster goalkeeper Johannes Schenk rushed out of his goal and, as the last man, tackled S04 striker Moussa Sylla.

Referee Florian Lechner ruled it a professional foul and, after a brief pause, showed Schenk a red card. Despite playing with one man down for a long stretch, SCP earned a well-deserved point against the second-place team from Gelsenkirchen, which struggled despite having a numerical advantage.

Nevertheless, the red card naturally has consequences for coach Alexander Ende’s team. As the German Football Association’s (DFB) sports court ruled on Monday, the young goalkeeper for the “Eagles” was suspended for two league matches for “unsportsmanlike conduct.”

The 22-year-old will therefore miss this coming Sunday’s derby at newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld, as well as the home game against Hannover 96 five days later. Morten Behrens, who already filled in for Schenk after his red card against Schalke, will take his place between the posts.

Points Table

And the regular backup was right up to the task against the Royal Blues and played a major role in preserving the 0-0 draw until the final whistle. Despite it being only his second second-division appearance for SCP, Münster’s backup goalkeeper gave the impression, with his carefree and confident demeanor, that he had been between the posts week after week.

“For a first-time start, that wasn’t bad,” he said, assessing his performance. The goalkeeper, who came up through the HSV youth system, added: “It’s the lot of a backup that you have to be ready to play at any time. When the time comes, you have to be there.”

SCP coach Ende shouldn’t have too many second thoughts, then, if he has to rely on his backup goalkeeper in the next two league games.
