Verstappen, who had started from pole position, was overtaken by McLaren driver Norris on the first lap, but regained the lead on the fifth lap and held it until the end.
Lando Norris edged out his fellow Briton, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, in a thrilling battle for second place.
In the constructors’ championship, Red Bull retained the lead ahead of Mercedes and Aston Martin.
Norris had been expected to drop back after his surprise second place on the grid, but he remained Verstappen’s closest pursuer throughout the race. After a safety car restart, he engaged in a wheel-to-wheel battle with seven-time champion Hamilton, who theoretically had the faster tyres, to secure second place, the best result for him and McLaren since 2021.
McLaren rookie Oscar Piastri finished fourth ahead of Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate George Russell. McLaren’s improved car proved far more competitive than even the team had predicted.
