“Causes massive damage”: Frankfurt president criticizes his own fans

Criticism of Eintracht fans from within the club’s own ranks. President Mathias Beck sees the club’s “success as being jeopardized” by this, but wants to maintain dialogue with the fan base.

The recent behavior of the active fan base of Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt has drawn sharp criticism from within the club’s own ranks. “These things don’t just make me angry. The incidents in Cologne and Barcelona are causing us massive harm,” President Mathias Beck told the Bild newspaper

According to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), Eintracht supporters recently set off pyrotechnics, damaged the restrooms in the visitors’ section, and threw objects during the Champions League away match at FC Barcelona. UEFA therefore decided that SGE may not sell away tickets for the match against Qarabag Agdam in Azerbaijan on January 21. Following rulings by the DFB Sports Court this year, the club also had to pay fines amounting to nearly seven figures due to fan misconduct.

“It makes me very angry as well, and of course something must be done if success is jeopardized by this,” said Beck, who has been in office since 2024 as Peter Fischer’s successor and intends to run for re-election: “We, but above all the fan community itself, must get this issue under control, but we have to stay on top of it consistently.” Board member Philipp Reschke is currently working on “solutions.”

Beck nevertheless wants to remain in dialogue with the fan community. Some “strayed from the ranks to the detriment of everyone else. And that is precisely why we cannot punish entire groups or condemn our fan community across the board,” said Beck: “We must not drift too far apart, because then, I believe, we will face real problems.”
