Class retention for VfL Bochum? These decisions could be made

Bundesliga soccer club VfL Bochum could secure their place in the league on the penultimate matchday. Further decisions could follow.

Admittedly, the two remaining match days in the Bundesliga no longer promise much excitement. At least not at the top: The champions, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, have already been decided weeks ago. With FC Bayern Munich, VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund, even the other four Champions League participants are set in stone. In addition, Darmstadt 98 has already been relegated.

The search is therefore still on for one relegated team, one relegation play-off participant and places six to eight, where things get more complicated.

Sixth place currently entitles the team to participate in the Europa League, seventh place in the Conference League. However, if BVB remain fifth and win the Champions League, sixth place will also go to the Champions League, seventh place to the Europa League and eighth place to the Conference League.

If Bayer Leverkusen win the DFB Cup, either a Europa League place will be added or the Conference League place will be removed – there is a maximum of eight German starting places in Europe. Here is an overview of the scenarios.

While there is still uncertainty regarding the significance of the respective placings due to the upcoming cup and premier league finals, it could at least be clear at the weekend who will occupy these places. In addition, VfL Bochum can make sure they stay in the league.

These decisions could be made on matchday 33:

Eintracht Frankfurt would be sure of sixth place if…

…Frankfurt wins at Borussia Mönchengladbach

…Frankfurt draw AND SC Freiburg AND TSG Hoffenheim do not win

…Frankfurt lose AND Freiburg AND Hoffenheim AND Augsburg do not win

1. FC Köln will be relegated if…

…it does not win against Union Berlin

VfL Bochum 1848 will be relegated if…

…it wins against Bayer Leverkusen

…it draws AND Union loses OR Mainz does not win.

…Mainz loses against BVB

Borussia Mönchengladbach will have secured relegation if…

…they win against Frankfurt

…they draw AND Union lose OR Mainz do not win.

…Mainz lose against BVB

1. FC Union Berlin has secured relegation if…

…it wins against Cologne AND Mainz loses against BVB
