While Gladbach II are climbing in the Regionalliga, things are going steadily downhill for the U21s of 1. FC Köln.
Derby time in the Regionalliga. The U21 of 1. FC Köln met the U23 of Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday. And the Cologne team had to make use of several players who had recently been playing for the U21s.
Rijad Smajic, Maximilian Schmid and Joshua Schwirten were in the professional squad for the 7:30 p.m. match against TSG Hoffenheim.
Not good omens for the Cologne team, who recently lost three games in a row. Opponents Gladbach, on the other hand, have only suffered one defeat in their last ten games.
And that was evident in Gladbach’s 2-0 win. Borussia got off to the better start. The first half belonged to the visitors, who had more of the game and also the better chances. But it remained 0-0 after 45 minutes.
After the change, the picture was different, Cologne came out of the dressing room better. But for a long time no goal was scored. Until the 72nd minute, when Gladbach’s Semir Telalovic scored a penalty to take the lead.
FC did not recover from this 0:1. Cologne conceded five yellow cards in the last 15 minutes. When they threw everything forward, Gladbach counter-attacked in injury time and scored through Phil Beckhoff to make it 2-0.
This was the fourth defeat in a row for Cologne, which is tantamount to slipping down to 15th place. Gladbach climbed to tenth place with the victory.
For 1. FC Köln, it continues on Saturday (5 November, 2 p.m.) with an away game at SV Straelen. At the same time, Gladbach will play at home against SV Lippstadt.
