He’s got it: Leonardo Vonic has scored his first goal of the 2025/2026 season for FC Porto’s B team.
It was a picture-perfect day for Leonardo Vonic: FC Porto B defeated Portimonense 1-0 on Sunday, November 23, 2025. And you can guess three times who scored the winning goal?
Correct: Vonic scored the goal of the day in the 47th minute, and Porto’s reserves secured the victory. It was also the striker’s first goal of the season, having made just eight appearances so far this campaign.
Things had been going well for the 22-year-old in Porto—until the start of the current season. While Vonic scored a whopping seven goals in twelve games last season, he currently has one goal in eight matches.
It remains to be seen whether the Croatian-born former Rot-Weiss Essen player will find his form following his goal-scoring debut in the 2025–26 season.
Vonic transferred from Rot-Weiss Essen to FC Porto’s reserve team in January 2025. And for a fee of a whopping 500,000 euros! Only RWE legends Horst Hrubesch (equivalent to 600,000 euros) and Frank Mill (555,000 euros) commanded higher transfer fees.
But the full story is this: That half-million for Vonic includes various bonus payments, such as appearances in professional matches and a resale. In that case, third-division club RWE would ultimately receive half a million euros in transfer fees for Vonic. For the initial sale, 350,000 euros flowed from Porto to Essen.
Upon his departure from Essen at the beginning of 2025, Vonic wrote to the fans of Rot-Weiss Essen: “Thank you very much for your fantastic support over the past 1.5 years! A special thank you goes to the fans, my teammates, the coaches, and everyone in charge. It was with you that I took my first steps in professional soccer—for that, I am infinitely grateful. I will always cherish our time together and wish the club and all of you only the best for the future. Rot-Weiss Essen will always remain something special to me! Stay healthy, and I’m sure we’ll see each other again!”
