SG Wattenscheid 09 went into the winter break with a positive feeling. Weeks ago, the Wattenscheid team was still down, but now they are back in the non-relegation places.
A few weeks ago, SG Wattenscheid 09 and SV Straelen were already relegated to their respective top divisions – Wattenscheid to the Westphalia division and Straelen to the Lower Rhine division.
But, lo and behold, while Straelen are still at the bottom of the table, Wattenscheid have fought their way back and have everything in their own hands again. They are just two points off the bottom of the table.
After the 4:3 victory in the last match of the year against Rot Weiss Ahlen, the Wattenscheid team is full of energy and is already looking forward to the 2023 season.
Coach Christian Britscho on…
.. the first half of the season in the Regionalliga West: “It’s fair to say that our first half of the season can be divided into three parts. In part one, we really took one on the chin, then we caught ourselves and kept the results closer, got the first points. Part three then started with the win against FC Schalke 04’s U23. Here we then got our wins and got better and better. Those are the three characteristics of our first half.”
… personnel changes in the winter break: “We don’t have that in mind for now. However, if players approach us and express their dissatisfaction, then we will sit down and see what else is possible for us on the market.”
… Goals for 2023: “Of course we want to build on the performances of the last few weeks and celebrate staying in the league at the end.
… the preparation: “We will play six test matches from the Landesliga to the Regionalliga. We want everyone to get some playing time, including our long-term injured players. We think that’s just the right thing to do to get back into shape. “
