Former BVB Pro Piszczek Takes the Helm at This Second-Division Club

Lukasz Piszczek is advancing his coaching career. The former Borussia Dortmund pro is taking over at a Polish second-division club effective immediately.

From December 3, 2014, to June 26, 2015, Tomasz Hajto was the coach of GKS Tychy in the Polish second division. The club still plays in the country’s second-tier league and has once again introduced a new coach.

More than ten years ago, Hajto, a former FC Schalke 04 player, retired in Tychy. A decade later, another coach who made a major impact as a player in the Bundesliga and the Ruhr region is returning: this time, a Borussia Dortmund player—namely, Lukasz Piszczek

Piszczek takes over as head coach of the team currently ranked 16th in the second division. His assistant coaches will be Przemyslaw Gomulka and Robert Góralczyk. GKS Tychy made the announcement.

“We are very proud to welcome Lukasz Piszczek as coach in Tychy. Over the past few weeks, we’ve had many positive discussions. We are convinced that hiring Lukasz is a major step forward—for the entire club. His philosophy aligns with ours. We hope for a long-term partnership,” said GKS board member Maximilian Kothny.

“I’m looking forward to the next stage in my coaching career. I’ve been preparing for this moment over the past few years. Now I can work at a club with great ambitions and great potential,” said Piszczek, a 66-time Polish national team player who also served as an assistant coach at BVB and worked with Nuri Şahin.

379 games for Borussia Dortmund

Lukasz Piszczek, who is 40 years old, played a total of 379 competitive games for Borussia Dortmund. The 66-time Polish international also made 87 appearances for Hertha BSC and 80 for Zaglebie Lubin during his professional career. In the summer of 2021, he ended his professional career and returned to LKS Goczalkowice, a Polish fifth-division club where his father serves as president. Today, LKS plays in the 4th Liga—and Piszczek is now head coach in Poland’s lower-tier soccer league.
