After only a few months, FC Basel has parted ways with its coach. The latter is a former Borussia Dortmund professional.
At the end of May 2022, RevierSport reported that Alexander Frei would become the new coach at FC Basel.
Now, around ten months later, this news: “FC Basel has come to the decision to end its cooperation with head coach Alex Frei with immediate effect. The FCB regrets this very much, but feels compelled to take this step due to the sobering sporting development,” it says on the homepage of the top club from Switzerland.
After 19 Super League rounds, FCB have only five victories to their name, with seven draws and seven defeats.
Basel’s lead over the last place in the table is just three points. A sporting disaster for this great club.
Sport director Heiko Vogel, who most recently worked in Germany as coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach II and KFC Uerdingen, says of Frei’s release: “This decision is of course enormously difficult for all of us – anyone who knows our special composition can imagine that. But we have to think about the FCB and its development, so we can’t avoid acting and giving the team new impetus. In the current situation, the 0:1 against GC at the weekend was unfortunately this one defeat too many. “
Heiko Vogel will temporarily lead the team as interim head coach. However, the FCB is aiming to fill the head coach position as soon as possible.
