Third division club SSV Jahn Regensburg is the team of the hour. The league leaders are on the verge of a record.
What a finish to the game between Dynamo Dresden and SSV Jahn Regensburg. This top game of the 3rd division offered excitement until the last second.
The better end had the guest on its side: The SSV Jahn won after 95 intense minutes in front of 29,578 spectators in the Rudolf-Harbig Stadium with 1-0 (0-0) and thus displaced Dresden from the top of the table. Florian Ballas headed the winning goal into the net in injury time after a corner from Tobias Eisenhuth, silencing the Dynamo fans.
This goal not only secured the lead in the table for his team, but also their ninth (!) win in a row. The last time head coach Joe Enochs’ team did not leave the pitch as winners was on September 23, when they lost 2-1 at home to SV Sandhausen. Regensburg has now won every game for over two months.
It is no surprise that the league leaders are on course to break a record. Ten consecutive wins is the best ever in the history of the 3rd division. This record was set by Karlsruher SC in the 2012/13 season. At the time, the team from Baden won everything there was to win in the league between October 24 and January 26, and celebrated promotion to the second division at the end of the season.
Regensburg is also on track to return to the second division. It already has a comfortable ten-point lead over third-placed SC Verl and fourth-placed Rot-Weiss Essen.
To equal KSC’s third-division record, the league leaders must beat SC Freiburg II, who are threatened with relegation, on Sunday afternoon (December 3, 4:30 p.m.). On paper, this seems like an easy task, but as we know, anything is possible in this 3rd division.
Should Jahn Regensburg beat Freiburg II, they could clinch the sole record with a home win against Viktoria Cologne on the following matchday (December 10, 1:30 p.m.) and thus finally immortalize themselves in the history books of the 3rd division.
