SC Freiburg won their second group match in the Europa League. Christian Strecih’s team was convincing all along the line at Olympiakos Piraeus.
The next exclamation mark in the witches’ cauldron: The impressively confident SC Freiburg continues to ride the wave of success in the Europa League. In the atmospheric duel at Greek record champion Olympiakos Piraeus, the second-placed team in the Bundesliga won 3-0 (2-0) in the style of a top team and thus put itself in an excellent position in the battle to advance.
Nicolas Höfler (5th) and Michael Gregoritsch (25th/53rd) scored for coach Christian Streich’s team at the Karaiskakis Stadium and ensured a dream start to the group stage after the tremulous opening victory against Azerbaijan champions Qarabag Agdam (2-1). A double-header against FC Nantes now awaits the Breisgau side, starting with the home game on 6 October.
After a pyro show by the Greek fans, Freiburg got off to a furious start in the fog. In Sport-Club’s first Europa League away match since November 2013, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (1st) provided the first warning shot before Höfler rewarded the visitors for their spirited start early on with a header.
Olympiakos fans cause interruption with pyro
The Freiburg eleven, who had already started in the league against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0-0), left no stone unturned, took control and created a clear chance plus against the frighteningly weak hosts. Gregoritsch, who had already hit the post (13th), scored after a fine assist from Kyereh to give Streich’s team a well-deserved two-goal lead at half-time.
Streich’s team continued to play confidently after the break, Freiburg dominated the action at will against the regular top flight club. Gregoritsch scored again from close range after a header from international Matthias Ginter, bringing some calm to the frenetic Olympiakos fans, who had caused a two-minute interruption with pyrotechnics in the first half.
