VfB Frohnhausen have started the 2022/2023 Landesliga season with five points from their first four games. Coach Issam Said is happy with the result.
Issam Said has been the head coach at VfB Frohnhausen for twelve years. The Essen team is now playing in the Landesliga for the fifth year in a row. More is not possible at the moment, as Said emphasises. But the entrepreneur, who runs the sports shop “Sport Duwe”, still has a big dream.
“As a coach, I want to coach in the top division one day. Preferably, of course, to play there with VfB Frohnhausen. But that’s not feasible at the moment. We have to improve our infrastructure. Maybe we’ll set our sights on that goal in two or three years’ time,” says Said.
In the past, I would have freaked out if someone flew into my sun during the season. But today, football is no longer number one. Guys have to look at the dough too and preferably fly away when it’s not holiday season.

The 45-year-old’s primary goal this season is to keep the team in the Landesliga for another year. The former goalkeeper also knows that this will not be so easy. “The league is incredibly balanced. Every team, except Rellinghausen, has already conceded a defeat after four games. Apart from two teams, everyone has also won at least one game. All of this shows how close it is. For us, it’s first of all about leaving four teams behind us and having a quiet season. That will be hard enough,” says the family man.
At the moment, before the city derby on Sunday against Tusem Essen, Said is missing some players – both due to injury and holidays. “In the past, I would have freaked out if someone flew into my sun during the season. But today, football is no longer number one. The boys also have to look at the money and preferably fly away when it’s not holiday time. That’s why I accept that. Times, especially financially, have changed,” says Said.
In the last match, Said had only one fit supplementary player at his disposal. For the weekend, he hopes that the squad will fill up a bit again. Said: “It will be difficult against Tusem. The duels in Essen are always very close. It’s always the form on the day that decides. “
