Mölders After Loss to Fortuna Köln: “That really upsets me…”

Despite holding a 1-0 lead, SC Wiedenbrück ultimately suffered a 1-3 loss to Fortuna Köln. That frustrated coach Sascha Mölders.

SC Wiedenbrück remains in a relegation spot. Following the 1-3 loss to Fortuna Köln, SCW has 11 points after 14 games. That puts them in third-to-last place in the Regionalliga West.

The East Westphalians could have achieved more against Fortuna Köln at their home stadium, the Jahnstadion. Especially since Wiedenbrück had taken a 1-0 lead through Aday Ercan (12th minute).

Sascha Mölders knew that, too. “In the first half, we didn’t let Fortuna get into their rhythm with their passing game. We fought hard and took the lead off a corner. But the goals we conceded were far too easy. We’re standing there, everyone’s just looking at each other, and we can’t get a grip on the situation. It annoys me that week after week we’re putting these goals in our own net. That really gets on my nerves. After falling behind 1–3, it naturally becomes incredibly difficult against a top-tier team. As far as effort goes, I can’t fault the team,” said Wiedenbrück’s coach.

One team’s misfortune—in this case, SC Wiedenbrück—is another’s joy—in this case, Fortuna Köln: One streak continued, while another came to an end. With their 3–1 victory at the Jahnstadion, Fortuna remained undefeated for the eleventh consecutive game in the Regionalliga West and defended their second-place standing in the standings. At the same time, coach Matthias Mink’s team managed to earn three points against SC Wiedenbrück after two years and four games without a single point.

“All in all, it was a well-deserved victory. At the same time, though, I wasn’t really satisfied with the first half. We didn’t start the game well and conceded the 0–1 right off a set piece. That was frustrating. On top of that, we didn’t really engage in the one-on-one battles at the start. Still, we had our chances, but aside from that one play, we lacked decisiveness in the box. We came out of the locker room much stronger afterward. But even with the 3–1 lead, the game wasn’t over yet. It was an intense game with difficult field conditions. Wiedenbrück’s style of play is tough to handle, so we’re extremely pleased with the road win,” said Fortuna coach Matthias Mink, who was delighted with the goals scored by Enzo Wirtz (40’, 51’) and Timo Bornemann (80’.)
