That was quick: Hamburger SV introduced Tim Walter’s successor just a few hours after his dismissal.
Shortly after the dismissal of Tim Walter, there was already speculation around Hamburger SV: Who’s next? Steffen Baumgart (most recently 1. FC Köln) and Raphael Wicky (Young Boys Bern) were mentioned at the forefront. Think again!
Sporting director Jonas Boldt refused to be drawn into the poker game for the Hamburger SV coaching position – and pulled a surprising trump card out of his sleeve: Merlin Polzin.
The former assistant coach is supposed to get the stumbling Hamburger SV back on track. At least for the time being. In the away game at Hansa Rostock next Saturday (13:00/Sky), the 33-year-old Polzin will “one hundred percent” be sitting on the bench – further employment is expressly not ruled out.
“He will definitely get the chance, out of conviction. We want to bring in stability and then take our time to see how things will continue in this constellation or perhaps elsewhere,” said Boldt at a hastily arranged press conference in Hamburg on Monday.
Regarding the speculated names, the sporting director said: “Of course we know the market well and know what is on the market and what we want. We are examining the possibilities that are feasible.”
Boldt once again explained why HSV parted company with Walter after two and a half years, having recently won in Berlin and at Schalke, but also conceded three home defeats in a row: “We saw the danger of things getting a bit out of hand. In the end, we realized that we no longer had the conviction to achieve our goals. It’s about the cause, not about people.”
Walter, who “endured” the longest time in the HSV hot seat since Frank Pagelsdorf between 1997 and 2001, was no longer trusted to return to the Bundesliga. The man from Baden had missed out on the hoped-for promotion twice in the relegation play-offs. Now the renewed rollercoaster ride was his undoing. “I would have liked to continue contributing to achieving our season goal together,” said Walter, who averaged 1.82 points per game in 103 games with HSV, dejectedly. wozi with sid
