The BVB women have been promoted, the Schalke women will soon follow suit. And VfL Bochum are on the verge of the regional league championship.
The women of Borussia Dortmund have been promoted to the Westfalenliga. With a 2:0 (1:0) win at SV Fortuna Freudenberg II, the BVB ladies are now mathematically unassailable.
Marie Grothe scored the two goals that took BVB out of the Landesliga. Dortmund coach Thomas Sulewski saw “not a good game”, but “the performance was partly due to the circumstances. We knew what could happen. We also had a team on the pitch that had never played together like this before.”
After the game, the coach emphasized: “Now we’re happy about the promotion.” The BVB women were honored during the break of Dortmund’s Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen (1:1) on Sunday.
The Schalke women will have to wait a little longer before they can celebrate promotion to the Westfalenliga. After the 0-0 draw at DJK VfL Billerbeck, the lead over Borussia Emsdetten is a whopping 14 points, but Emsdetten have played two games less.
Therefore, promotion would be possible in three match days at the earliest if both teams were to win. VfL Bochum also have to wait before they can wrap up the championship in the Regionalliga.
Last weekend’s match at 1. FFC Recklinghausen was canceled. Fortuna Köln are eleven points behind second place with five matchdays to go until the end of the season. This means that if both teams win, VfL could celebrate the championship in two match days.
Of course, the women’s Bundesliga is not about promotion. On the contrary: MSV Duisburg have been relegated for the first time this weekend. The women of SGS Essen, on the other hand, are still going strong. After a 2:1 win against TSG Hoffenheim, the Essen women are in a strong fifth place with three matchdays to go in the season
