Major disappointment at SSV Jahn Regensburg. The former second-division side lost the Bayern derby against FC Ingolstadt 0-3. The coach had some strong words.
SSV Jahn Regensburg has gotten off to a dismal start in the second half of the third-division season. In the Bavarian derby against FC Ingolstadt, Michael Wimmer’s team fell to Sabrina Wittmann’s squad 0–3.
A quick-fire double from goals by Jonas Scholz (20th min.) and Julian Kügel (23rd min.) put Ingolstadt on track. Because FCI failed to seal the deal on several occasions in the second half, the match remained exciting until the closing stages. In the 90th minute, Marcel Costly then sealed the win for FCI, who overtook Regensburg with 25 points. Jahn’s lead over the relegation zone is now temporarily down to just three points. Regensburg coach Michael Wimmer spoke bluntly on “Magenta Sport”: “The way we played in the first half—in terms of passion, tackling, and commitment—wasn’t enough. Maybe we thought that after our good preseason, everything would just fall into place. We scored those two goals against ourselves. That’s naive again; we have to put a stop to that as soon as possible.“
Wimmer emphasized: ”We have to be brutally honest and admit that we’re not as far along as some on the outside might have thought. It’s a brutal fight to stay in the league! We have to address that clearly:”
Ingolstadt coach Sabrina Wittmann said about her exuberant celebration after the 3-0 win: “You always talk about ‘falling off.’ We won a derby here—and relatively convincingly. I believe that the joy can be great regardless of ‘falling off.’ Even if we didn’t have the ball more than the opponent, I would still say there’s no doubt that we fully deserved to win. There’s a bit of joy in that, too.
Ingolstadt’s Julian Kügel, who scored the 2-0 goal, added on “Magenta Sport”: “This game meant a lot to us. It was an important game for the fans, too. I’m happy that we’re taking the three points back to Ingolstadt for the club, for ourselves, and for the fans.”
