Wuppertaler SV lost its Lower Rhine Cup quarterfinal against FC Büderich at the last second. Then the situation escalated.

FC Büderich sensationally knocked Wuppertaler SV out of the Lower Rhine Cup. In the aftermath of the Oberliga team’s 1-0 victory over the Regionalliga side, however, scenes unfolded that no one wants to see on a soccer field.

It was the 95th minute when Jannik Schulte sent everyone rooting for FC Büderich into a frenzy. Contrary to the run of play, he put the Oberliga team ahead 1-0 and ultimately sent them to the Lower Rhine Cup semifinals.

For some WSV fans, the frustration of the past few weeks clearly boiled over.

The police described the ensuing events in a statement as follows: “Shortly before the end, FC Büderich scored the goal to make it 1–0. As a result, about 40 Wuppertal fans stormed the field and began throwing metal rods and seat shells around. Thanks to the immediate and decisive intervention of police officers, the troublemakers were prevented from attacking bystanders. Since the troublemakers continued to throw metal bars and other metallic objects at the officers, batons and pepper spray were deployed, and reinforcements were requested from surrounding agencies.”

Subsequently, the police detained the Wuppertal supporters. “The troublemakers were provisionally detained by the police to establish their identities and initiate appropriate criminal proceedings. No police officers were injured in the process. Six troublemakers suffered minor eye irritation from the use of pepper spray and received first aid from emergency medical personnel.

After police operations were concluded, the troublemakers were transported back to Wuppertal by bus. Criminal proceedings for breach of the peace have been initiated. The criminal investigation department has taken over the investigation.”

On the sports front, Büderich will learn who their semifinal opponent is this coming Wednesday (November 19, 7:30 p.m.). That match will be decided starting at 7:30 p.m. between SC St. Tönis and VfB Hilden. In the Regionalliga West, Wuppertaler SV is scheduled to host Fortuna Düsseldorf II on Saturday (November 22, 2:00 p.m.). Büderich will host 1. FC Kleve in the Oberliga Niederrhein as early as Friday evening (8:00 p.m.).
