Schalke also playing for several TV millions in relegation battle

Schalke 04, 18th in the Bundesliga, is threatened with direct relegation. This would have massive financial consequences – among other things, 6.8 million euros are at stake.

Relegation is expensive, as FC Schalke 04 has already experienced: numerous revenues from match operations, sponsorship and especially TV marketing are lost or significantly reduced. For the current 18th-placed team in the Bundesliga, a lot of money is at stake in the remaining 19 Bundesliga games of the 2022/23 season – including 6.8 million euros from the international marketing of the league. The Kicker quotes this from the current planning figures of the German Football League.

In the event of relegation, the Königsblauen would lose considerably more from this pot than their competitors. Thanks to its successes in the past, Schalke still participates with a large share of this pot – but it is distributed almost exclusively to first-division teams; for the 2nd Bundesliga there is only a much lower solidarity contribution.

The international income is distributed in two different ways: Via the so-called equal distribution pillar, each Bundesliga club receives around three million euros. Via the international performance pillar, a total of 77.76 million euros are distributed according to the international performance of the past five years – and a further 23.33 million euros are allocated via a ten-year ranking, which rewards participation in international competitions.

In addition to the three million euros from the equal distribution, Schalke 04 will receive a further 1.83 million from the five-year ranking and 2.19 million from the ten-year ranking in the current season. In other words, a total of around seven million euros. For 2023/24, the Knappen still stand to receive around 6.8 million euros from the international pots – but only if they stay in the league. In the event of relegation, only a six-figure sum remains. The second division clubs will only receive a solidarity contribution of 6.48 million euros, which will be distributed according to a ranking key.
