Legia Warsaw, a top club in Poland, is currently exploring the market and preparing for a change of coach. A former Schalke coach is also in the running.
As reported by the Polish newspaper “Fakt”, Andre Breitenreiter is a hot candidate at Legia Warsaw.
The former Schalke and Hoffenheim coach is to replace the Portuguese Goncalo Feio, who is under fire. A first meeting between the Legia management and the 51-year-old Breitenreiter is said to have already taken place. He was Huddersfield Town’s head coach in England until May 10, 2024, and has now been out of a job for a good five months.
Michael Wimmer (most recently Austria Vienna, before that interim coach at VfB Stuttgart) is also said to be among the candidates in the Polish capital.
In Warsaw, they seem to have had enough of Feio. Legia are already nine points behind Lech Poznan after eleven games. The last title for the capital city club, which is accustomed to success, dates back to the 2020/2021 season. This means that Legia have been waiting three years for the championship. And in this series, it will probably not be the national title again.
It doesn’t help Feio at the moment that he brought Legia into the group stage of the Conference League and caused a surprise on matchday 1 with a 1-0 win over Betis Sevilla. Legia just aren’t playing the way the fans and management want them to. Then there are Feio’s antics on the sidelines. The 34-year-old often has no control over his emotions and nerves.
He has complexes, he has only seen real football on TV. For me, he is a parody of a coach
Tomasz Hajto on Goncalo Feio
After advancing to the European Cup in mid-August against Brondby Copenhagen – Forecasting reported – he showed both middle fingers to the approximately 1000 fans who had traveled from Copenhagen. An absolute no-go gesture – and that even from a coach who should serve as a role model.
Feio has repeatedly attracted negative attention in Poland in the past. At his last club, Motor Lublin, he punched club president Pawel Tomczyk in the head. The injured party had to be taken to hospital, while coach Feio was dismissed. Now the obscene gestures towards the Copenhagen fans.
Tomasz Hajto, who played 141 competitive games (nine goals, eleven assists) for Schalke between 2000 and 2004, said: “I demand that the PZPN punish Feio and take him out of circulation. His behavior at the press conference was also unacceptable. He has complexes, and the only real football he has seen so far has been on TV. To me, he is a parody of a coach.”
And even if Feio is still in office in the coming hours, he could lose his job soon – possibly be replaced by Breitenreiter.
He was also under contract with TSG Hoffenheim, FC Zurich, Hannover 96, FC Schalke 04, SC Paderborn and TSV Havelse before Huddersfield.
