SV Wehen Wiesbaden is back in the promotion race after picking up another three points against 1. FC Schweinfurt. This coming weekend, SVWW will host MSV Duisburg.
Things are just clicking for Daniel Scherning and SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Since the 42-year-old took over as head coach of the Hessian side last November, the team has recorded six wins, one draw, and just two losses.
The in-form Wiesbaden side also picked up three points on Saturday against bottom-of-the-table 1. FC Schweinfurt. Although the score remained 0-0 for a long time, Moritz Flotho delivered the decisive goal in the 88th minute. The deadlock was broken. Shortly after, Ibrahim Ati Allah added to the lead, sealing the 2-0 final score. For the 18-year-old, it was the first professional goal of his career.
SVWW coach Scherning told “Magenta Sport” after the final whistle: “I told the guys that it wouldn’t be an easy game and that, if necessary, we’d have to be patient until the 85th minute or even into stoppage time to score the goal. The substitutions were once again very good; they had a huge impact on the game. It wasn’t an easy game, but we didn’t win undeservedly either. In my view, we should have been awarded one or two penalties. Then you’d have that game-changer. Overall, we were still too sluggish and ponderous at times, but we always knew we could pull something off at any moment.”
Quietly and steadily, the Wiesbaden team—which was still in 15th place after Matchday 15—has worked its way up the table. Now, sitting in seventh place and just three points behind the promotion playoff spot, they are suddenly in the mix for promotion.
The Hessians haven’t lost four games in a row, and in their last eight league matches, they’ve lost just once. This coming Saturday (February 14, 2 p.m.), the next test awaits SVWW, as top-tier side MSV Duisburg visits the Brita-Arena.
Scherning: “Next week against Duisburg will be a different game here at home, because the opponent approaches such a match differently than Schweinfurt. The test of patience we faced, we ultimately turned in our favor. I’m very proud.”
