With a 2-1 win against SC Preußen Münster, VfL Bochum celebrated their second victory in the second match of the season – and thus extended their series from the preparation matches.
It was a competitive match between the U19s of VfL Bochum and SC Preußen Münster with the better end for the Bochum team. After taking an early lead in the first half through a penalty, SCP equalised before the break. In the second half, Bochum stepped up their game and scored the decisive goal just 20 minutes before the final whistle to make the final score 2-1.
VfL head coach Heiko Butscher was also pleased with the victory and the successful start to the season, but also recognised potential for improvement: “It was a very hard piece of work. It’s always very difficult to satisfy me completely. But it is also our goal to have a lot of things that don’t go quite so well yet and simply improve them in the course of the season. And we still see a lot of room for improvement.” In particular, there is still room for improvement in terms of taking chances and communication in defence.
The fact that each team only plays each other once in the U19 Bundesliga means that some teams can find themselves in a tight spot after a poor start to the season. That’s why Butscher believes: “In this constellation, with only 15 games and many relegated teams, we will have many games that have a character like the encounter against Münster.”
His addition: “Our claim simply remains that we want to find footballing solutions. We are on a good path, but we also recognise that there is still a lot of work to do,” the VfL coach explained regarding the rest of the season.
After 14 wins in 14 preparation games: Bochum continue to win in the league
The fact that Bochum are in good shape and have a strong team together was already apparent during the preparation. The 14 test matches the team played in the summer were all won. Despite the long winning streak, the VfL coach remains realistic about the season’s goals: “We look from game to game. There’s not much else to do. It’s all about the boys performing consistently well. That is our goal. We want everyone to reach their performance level and then we will play well as a team. But that’s not based on any league positions. Of course we’re happy because wins give you a lot of self-confidence and then you can work differently.”
The VfL juniors should have gathered plenty of self-confidence in recent weeks. On Matchday 3 (28 August, 11 a.m.), Bochum’s junior footballers will then play against MSV Duisburg’s U19s and have the opportunity to extend their winning streak further.
