Duo not considered, new number ten still has room for improvement

It looks like Jonas Michelbrink and Moritz Montag are definitely leaving. Christian Viet remains modest about his offensive role.

When the MSV team took a group photo with all the wheelchair fans after the final whistle of their successful XXL test match against Lommel SK (6-2) in Homberg, Moritz Montag had already disappeared into the dressing room. Alongside the former Oberhausen player, Jonas Michelbrink was once again not given a chance to show his stuff despite playing 120 minutes against the Belgian second division side. The repeated omission of the two promoted players is a clear indication of the club’s intentions. Dietmar Hirsch’s statement on the matter leaves something to be read between the lines: “Jonas didn’t play, others did well. That’s enough.” The coach made it clear weeks ago that he didn’t want to chase anyone away. However, the chances of a place in the third division squad remain slim. Especially since, apart from the slightly injured Mert Göckan, all players in Duisburg’s broad squad have come through the six preparatory games so far without injury. “We have made progress in our play and are well on our way to being at a good third division level in two weeks,” said Hirsch, who demanded a lot from his players in terms of tactics during the week. That also applies to Christian Viet. The new playmaker joined the club in the summer from second division relegation side Jahn Regensburg and is considered a top candidate for the number 10 position in the familiar 4-2-3-1 system, and not just because of his shirt number. “That’s up to the coach to decide,” said the 26-year-old cautiously after the Lommel game. “Compared to the last few tests, the processes were much better. We were very compact, but we need to make more of our chances up front,” demanded Viet. The former St. Pauli player’s appointment to the new team council alone shows how comfortable he already feels at his new club. His integration could hardly have gone more smoothly. “The team is great and has welcomed me well.”

Even though the midfielder has improved from game to game, Viet still sees room for improvement in his performance. “It hasn’t been that great yet. I still lack stamina and a lot in terms of football. Overall, though, I have a good feeling. We’re already noticing things that aren’t working, rather than waiting until the season is underway. We’re all looking forward to finally getting started and the preparations being over.”

Viet is also settling into life in Duisburg, including his cats. The current hotel guest hasn’t found an apartment yet, but he already has some viewings lined up with his pets.
