Fortuna prepared – WSV match plan plays into Cologne’s hands

In their Regionalliga West opener against Fortuna Cologne, Wuppertaler SV showed a match plan that they had already used in preparation. Fortuna coach Mink had expected this.

In the 0-2 (0-1) defeat in the Regionalliga West opener against Fortuna Cologne, Wuppertaler SV put in a strong performance – but also made mistakes in their build-up play that had already been evident in the preparations.

19 minutes had been played when goalkeeper Michael Luyambula played the ball through the center to Alessio Arambasic. He turned into his opponent Rafael Garcia, lost the ball and could only prevent the Cologne player from scoring with a last-ditch tackle – a clear red card. Either a wrong decision or a wrong (or missing) command from Luyambula, who passed the ball. It’s no secret that Wuppertal chose this risky style of play; it was already evident in the preparation phase. This did not escape Fortuna coach Matthias Mink and was therefore part of the match plan.“As with the red card situation, we knew that one or two favorable moments would come when they would try to play out from the back,” said Mink, who was prepared for Wuppertal’s game plan. “They showed in the preparation that they wanted to do it that way. Rafael then anticipated it brilliantly.”

Luyambula pragmatic, Tyrala finds it ‘funny’

Luyambula didn’t want to make a big deal out of it, but saw it more pragmatically. “That’s our game plan, which we try to stick to. Of course, the red card is very annoying; it changed the game. We did well after that, but it was difficult to come back.”

Alongside Arambasic, Celal Aydogan also played, who was played through the center a few times and had to clear up one or two tricky situations. He made it clear that “something like that shouldn’t happen. But of course we want to play soccer, that’s what the coach told us to do. But those are mistakes that shouldn’t happen, we have to keep working on them in training so that they don’t happen again.”

It was right for Michael to play there for a short time, because we brought Alessio in for situations like that – so that he doesn’t lose the ball there. He knows he has to do better. Sebastian Tyrala

Coach Sebastian Tyrala, on the other hand, didn’t want to hear anything about discussions regarding the game plan. “It’s always funny. First we play a long ball that comes straight back. That’s when it gets dangerous, with a huge chance for Cologne, but nobody talks about tactics. I don’t think we need to rethink anything.”

“Alessio has played 100 regional league games. It wouldn’t have been a big problem to just let the ball bounce,“ added the coach. ”He knows he made a mistake there. It was right for Michael to play short, because that’s why we brought Alessio in – so he doesn’t lose the ball in situations like that. He knows he has to do better.”

Due to the red card, Arambasic will not have the opportunity to play for SSVg Velbert. However, WSV will try to pick up their first points there. Kick-off at the IMS Arena is this coming Friday (August 1) at 7:30 p.m.
