Second division relegated team signs striker from Borussia Dortmund II

SSV Ulm 1846 has secured a new striker one week before the start of the third division season. He comes from Borussia Dortmund’s second team.

SSV Ulm 1846 has strengthened its squad once again a week before the start of the third division season, drawing on the Regionalliga West: Paul-Philipp Besong is moving from Borussia Dortmund II to the second division relegated team in Baden-Württemberg.

The 24-year-old striker signed a contract with the Spatzen until 2027 and will wear the number 17 jersey. The club announced this on Saturday (July 26).

Besong is already familiar with the third division. He made a total of 57 appearances for Erzgebirge Aue and BVB II in the third-highest division, scoring twelve goals. He also played for the reserves of 1. FC Nürnberg, making 19 appearances and scoring eight goals in the Bavarian regional league. However, injuries repeatedly slowed the striker down, including a cruciate ligament rupture, a torn outer meniscus, and a meniscus injury, which caused him to miss 18 games in the 2024/25 season.

SSV managing director Markus Thiele: “Paul is a piece of the puzzle that was missing in our offense. We are very pleased that we were able to convince him to join us and are confident that his quality, which undoubtedly lies in his pace and finishing, will enrich our team.”

At the age of eight, Besong joined Borussia Dortmund’s youth academy in 2009 and progressed through all of the BVB youth teams. After spells in Nuremberg and Aue, he returned to Dortmund in 2023 and now wants to take the next step in southern Germany. Paul-Philipp Besong is looking forward to his new challenge: “I am very happy about the move to SSV Ulm 1846 Football. The talks were very positive from the start and quickly convinced me. I firmly believe that we can achieve a lot.” SSV Ulm 1846 kicks off the new season in the 3rd division on Sunday, August 3. At the end of the first matchday, the Spatzen will be guests at SV Wehen Wiesbaden at 7:30 p.m.
