Setback for Rot-Weiss Essen and talented Nico Schulte-Kellinghaus: The 17-year-old was injured in a test match against FC Augsburg – possibly seriously.
Rot-Weiss Essen wanted to confirm its good early form in a double test at FC Augsburg on Friday and complete a successful dress rehearsal for the start of the third division season in a week’s time. And it seemed to be working at first, with RWE leading 2-0 after half an hour in the first of two test matches and ultimately winning 2-1.
However, an injury drama overshadowed Essen’s good start. Talent Nico Schulte-Kellinghaus injured his knee in the 30th minute, possibly seriously. The 17-year-old center back remained on the ground after his opponent fell on his knee.
After a short treatment break, it was clear that he would not be able to continue. Schulte-Kellinghaus had to leave the pitch supported by teammates, and doctors from both clubs then attended to the youngster. Talent Kamil Kaya came on to replace Schulte-Kellinghaus.
No further information on the severity of the injury was available at the time.
An MRI scan will provide more information. If RWE is unable to give the all-clear with regard to a possible serious knee injury, it would be a bitter setback for the third-division club and especially for Schulte-Kellinghaus. The defensive player signed a professional contract in the spring and, as in the winter, completed his preseason training under coach Uwe Koschinat.
Schulte-Kellinghaus showed why in recent weeks, impressing in training and in test matches. The Red and Whites believe the left-footed player has the potential to make the leap to professional football. However, Schulte-Kellinghaus is to be built up carefully and will continue to play for Essen’s U19 team in the coming season, while also training with the pros. “We see great, positive development in him and want to continue to guide him toward professional soccer,” Marcus Steegmann, director of professional soccer, said about Schulte-Kellinghaus some time ago. Now, however, Essen must first hope that the young defender has not suffered a serious injury.
