Verl confidently advances, crazy penalty shootout thriller between two Oberliga teams

The second round of the Westphalia Cup had a lot to offer—surprises, landslide victories, and, above all, plenty of drama from the penalty spot.

On Wednesday and Thursday evening, the second main round of the Westphalia Cup was completed.

After a few surprises, such as the elimination of the two regional league teams SV Rödinghausen (7-8 on penalties against RW Maaslingen) and Sportfreunde Siegen (0-1 against TuS Erndtebrück), there were few surprises in the remaining matches. Instead, some of the games were highly exciting and dramatic.

SC Verl, the only third division team in the competition, lived up to its role as favorite against regional league team BV Bad Lippspringe, winning 5-1 on Wednesday. In the duel between two Westphalia league teams, SC Peckeloh prevailed over FSC Rheda 3-1.

Westfalenliga club Wacker Obercastrop put up a good fight against SG Finnentrop-Bamenohl, who play one division higher, and forced a penalty shootout after the score was 1-1 after 90 minutes – there is no extra time in this competition. The underdogs then lost their nerve, with former BVB pro and world champion Kevin Großkreutz among those who missed their penalties. In the end, the Oberliga team prevailed. Türkspor Dortmund also got away with a black eye. The Regionalliga relegation team also had to go through a penalty shootout at Landesliga team ASK Ahlen after a high-scoring 90 minutes in which both teams scored four times. Dortmund kept their cool and secured their ticket to the next round.

SV Schermbeck and TuS Hiltrup took things to the extreme in their Oberliga duel. The score was 1-1 at the end of regular time, so once again the decision had to be made from the spot. The first penalty on both sides missed, but then 25 penalties in a row (!) found the net. Several players had to step up to the spot twice. Because Hiltrup then missed the 26th penalty, Schermbeck celebrated at the end and celebrated their entry into the round of 16. Unbelievable!

On Thursday, Verbandsliga club VfL Theesen won 4-1 at VfB Schloß Holte. The only goal for the Landesliga club was scored by former RWE and MSV professional Sören Brandy. In addition, BSV Schüren (Westfalenliga) beat district league team VfR Sölde 4-1. Oberliga club Eintracht Rheine kept things exciting for a long time against SV RW Deuten (Landesliga), but a 4-2 win was enough to secure their place in the next round of the cup.
