The late 2-1 victory against Alemannia Aachen was SC Verl’s first at their home stadium. The relief among the East Westphalians was correspondingly great.
SC Verl has now done it: with their late 2-1 victory against Alemannia Aachen, the East Westphalians celebrated their first success of the season in their own stadium.
“That’s where – if I may say so – I get a kick out of it. Because you can see that the team is alive. Everyone here is happy for each other. This culture is amazing,” said Verl’s coach Tobias Strobl on “Magenta Sport,” commenting on his internal and external emotional explosion after Julian Stark’s lucky winning goal to make it 2-1 in the 89th minute.
Verl initially had much more of the game. Aachen’s Strujic spectacularly prevented his team from falling behind when he slid in to deflect the ball onto the post for the beaten Olschowsky (17th minute). The visitors recovered and were subsequently the superior team. However, it was Verl who scored the goal. Meyer brought down Gayret, and Berkan Taz converted the penalty to make it 1-0 (60′). Aachen responded immediately: Ens laid the ball off to Lars Gindorf in the penalty area, who finished with great composure to make it 1-1 (70′). Shortly before the end, Alemannia suffered a blow and SC Verl scored the winning goal: after a cross into the Aachen penalty area, Yarbrough missed the ball and Julian Stark pushed it over the line to make it 2-1 (89′).
Was this home win a question of willpower? “Yes, that’s exactly what we said. Sometimes you have to work hard for a win, and you want it with all your might. The substitutes also brought new energy to the game, which was great. The boys have proven so many times that they can play soccer. It was a hard-fought victory, and I’m incredibly proud of that,” said Strobl.
Now his team can prove their newfound strength in front of their home crowd once again. On Sunday, September 21, at 4:30 p.m., SC Verl will play at home against Energie Cottbus. Then Tobias Strobl’s men will be looking to add another three points at Poststraße.
