On Monday evening, SV Wacker Obercastrop parted ways with its coaching team Kevin Großkreutz and Jimmy Thimm. An old acquaintance will take over on an interim basis.
SV Wacker Obercastrop pulled the plug on Monday evening and parted ways with coaching duo Kevin Großkreutz and Jimmy Thimm. The bottom team in the Westfalenliga 2 reacted to its poor start to the season, with only two points from seven games. “After analyzing the team’s performance, both sides came to the mutual decision to terminate the existing contract. This ends SV Wacker Obercastrop’s collaboration with the coaching team led by Kevin Großkreutz and Jimmy Thimm,” according to the club’s official website.
Just one day after the coaching team was dismissed, an interim solution has been found. Björn Brinkmann, coach of the second team, will take the helm together with sporting director Steffen Golob and goalkeeping coach David Menke.
This is not the first time Brinkmann has stepped in for Obercastrop. After Toni Molina’s resignation in January 2024, he was already on the sidelines on an interim basis for the Westfalenliga club in the second half of the 2023/24 season. His record: six wins, two draws, six losses. He then returned to the second team. In the summer, he resigned from his position to take a break from soccer. “I didn’t think I’d be back so soon and, to be honest, I didn’t miss soccer. On Monday evening, I received a request from the club to take over on an interim basis. Of course, I had to think about it for a moment. But I know the club, many of the people, and, of course, the sporting situation. I also had to discuss it with my family, but that was the least of my problems,” Brinkmann told the “Ruhr Nachrichten” newspaper.
The interim trio led by Brinkmann will be in action for the first time on Wednesday in the second round of the district cup against district league club SG Herne 70. They are also set to referee the upcoming league match against FC Iserlohn on Sunday before the club potentially presents a new permanent solution.
