It was a clash of opposites, and that’s how it remained: VfL Osnabrück did what it had to do at 1. FC Schweinfurt 05. Here’s what the protagonists had to say.
VfL Osnabrück won 2-1 at 1. FC Schweinfurt 05, albeit not too convincingly. That’s because 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 had its chances, even if there weren’t too many of them.
After 51 minutes, VfL’s lead through David Kopacz (40′) was almost gone: Jakob Tranziska’s attempt was just deflected onto the inside post by VfL keeper Lukas Jonsson.
“It’s a shame, of course. We would have liked to take something away with us. The performance was okay for long stretches, but the goals we conceded hurt. You don’t get many chances against Osnabrück. You have to make the most of the few you get. Nevertheless, I’m proud of the team’s morale and the fact that we came back and created momentum together with the fans,“ said Schweinfurt coach Victor Kleinhenz afterwards on ”Magenta Sport.”
Because VfL took a 2-0 lead in the 77th minute through Robin Meißner and Nico Grimbs was only able to reduce the deficit to 1-2 from Schweinfurt’s point of view (87th minute), it was ultimately not enough to earn a point for the “Schnüdel,” who now travel to Rot-Weiss Essen (Sunday, November 2, 4:30 p.m.) with a horror record of one win and eleven defeats in twelve games.
Timo Schultz, coach of VfL Osnabrück, still had something to complain about after the game: “Especially in the middle of the second half, we have to play our counterattacks much better. This issue is haunting us. We’re working on it, but man… this constant work isn’t enough at some point. At some point, the ball has to go in. We’re taking three points back to Osnabrück, that’s what matters. The team put in a confident performance and conceded very little. In the end, we had to endure some unnecessary nervous moments, but basically it went as we had imagined. We need to work on our quality to score the second, third, and fourth goals—that would have been possible.”
Osnabrück would be well advised to do better next Saturday. Because on November 1, at 2 p.m., MSV Duisburg will be coming to the Bremer Brücke for the top match.
