Since Benedetto Muzzicato was dismissed as coach, everything has been running smoothly at Alemannia Aachen: two games, two wins. However, a successor to Muzzicato has not yet been found.
With ten points from eleven games, the Alemannia Aachen management team led by managing director Rachid Azzouzi was so dissatisfied that they dismissed both technical director Erdal Celik and coach Benedetto Muzzicato, the two people responsible for sporting matters.
Celik had once brought Heiner Backhaus to Alemannia Aachen, was promoted with the imperial city club, and then signed Muzzicato in the summer of 2025 after Backhaus moved to Eintracht Braunschweig. He was also responsible for putting together the squad.
The last two games proved that Aachen does not have a bad team. After Muzzicato’s dismissal, Alemannia was able to secure two victories at SSV Ulm and against 1. FC Saarbrücken.
And all this under interim coach Ilyas Trenz, who was assistant to both Backhaus and Muzzicato. Carsten Wissing is currently assisting Trenz as his “co.” What happens next is still unclear. But one thing is certain: neither Trenz nor Wissing have the coaching license required for the 3rd division. However, SSV Ulm proved that it is possible to do without it, but then fines will be imposed, as Forecasting reported.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you one last time: Firstly, to Rachid Azzouzi, who has given me his full trust and support over the past two weeks. He has backed me up, and that has done me a world of good. Secondly, to my entire team – especially the coaching team.
Ilyas Trenz
Trenz could well become a permanent solution. However, there are also a few other coaching names floating around in Aachen. For example: Cristian Fiel (most recently Hertha BSC and 1. FC Nürnberg) and former Bundesliga player at Alemannia, or the name of third division record coach Pavel Dotchev (most recently FC Erzgebirge Aue).
In addition, according to forecasting information, a well-known Eurofighter from FC Schalke 04 is also a hot candidate. We are talking about Mike Büskens. He has worked in various positions at Schalke in recent years—assistant coach, supervisor of loan players, technical staff—and left the Gelsenkirchen club in the summer of 2024.
The last head coach position held by the 57-year-old Düsseldorf native was at Rapid Vienna in the 2016/2017 season. Interestingly, Aachen’s boss Azzouzi and Büskens know each other from their time together at Spielvereinigung Greuther Fürth. Azzouzi worked in Franconia from 2004 to 2012 and 2017 to 2024. Büskens also served as head coach in Fürth twice – from December 27, 2009, to March 20, 2013, and February 23, 2015, to June 30, 2015. It remains to be seen what coaching decision will be made at Tivoli. At least the current successful interim coach Trenz remains calm. After the 2-0 win over Saarbrücken, the 28-year-old young coach said: “I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you one last time: Firstly, to Rachid Azzouzi, who has given me his full trust and support over the past two weeks. He has backed me up, and that has done me a world of good. Secondly, to my entire team – especially the coaching team. We were reorganized to a certain extent. Carsten Wissing, for example, left his own team to help us out. The willingness and the many hours the guys invested – all of that makes it even more wonderful that we were able to reward ourselves with two victories.”
