Mats Hummels almost ended up at this top club in 2024

Mats Hummels ended his career in the summer. As a TV expert at Amazon, he revealed where he almost ended up after leaving BVB.

Mats Hummels can look back on a successful career in professional soccer. Before ending his career in the summer, the 36-year-old collected numerous titles, winning championships, cups, and the World Cup. However, the Champions League title is missing from his collection. He came very close in 2024 when he lost the final against Real Madrid in his last game for Borussia Dortmund.

And apparently, Hummels wasn’t too far off winning the most prestigious trophy in club football in the last year of his career. The Champions League title went to Paris Saint-Germain in the 2024/25 season – the club Hummels almost ended up at after leaving BVB.

The former world-class center back revealed this ahead of FC Bayern’s Champions League match at PSG on Wednesday. “Of course, I have to be careful what I say now. Yes, but it’s true. In the summer of 2024, towards the end of the transfer window, there was interest from both sides, including me, I don’t have to beat around the bush,” Hummels said on Prime Video.

Hummels works as a TV expert for the streaming service. He went on to tell reporter Cayana Freeman: “But then it fell through because a personnel change in the squad would have been necessary, but it didn’t happen. It almost happened anyway, but in the end it didn’t. But maybe if things had turned out differently, you might still see me back there.”

Hummels may have caught the French club’s interest during their Champions League semifinal clash in the 2023/24 season. In the second leg, he scored the 1-0 winning goal and led BVB to the final. He then said goodbye to the Ruhr region. Hummels remained without a club for a while before finally moving to AS Roma in Italy after flirting with PSG. He ended his career there in the summer, while Paris won the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
